Cookie policy
What this site stores in your browser, why, and how to clear it. That is three small settings, no cookies of our own, and one video player that loads only if you press play.
01. This site sets no cookies of its own
A cookie is a small file a site asks your browser to keep and sends back on every later request. We do not set any, for analytics, advertising or anything else.
We keep three small settings in your browser's own storage, which is a different mechanism: the values stay on your device and are never sent to us. They are listed below.
Some pages carry an embedded YouTube player. It loads nothing until you press play, and it is not ours once it does. That is the whole of the third-party story here, and it has its own section below.
02. What we keep on your device
- breaker-theme: whether you chose the light or the dark palette, so the site opens the way you left it. Kept until you clear it.
- breaker:theme-hint-seen: whether you have been shown the one-time pointer to the light/dark switch, so you are not shown it twice. Kept until you clear it.
- breaker:loader-seen: whether the opening animation has played this visit, so it does not replay on every page. Cleared when you close the tab.
None of these identify you, none are read by anyone else, and none leave your browser. Blocking or clearing them costs you nothing but the setting itself.
03. Why there is no cookie banner
Consent banners exist for cookies and similar technologies that track you, or that are not needed to give you what you asked for. We set none, and the one third party that could is not loaded unless you ask for it by pressing play on a video.
That is why the video player is built the way it is. Until you press play there is nothing to consent to, and pressing play is itself the clearest way you could ask for it.
If we ever add anything that does need your consent, such as analytics, this page will say so and the site will ask before loading it.
04. The YouTube player
The product demo on the Avalon page is a video hosted by YouTube, and a news article can carry one the same way. Until you press play, nothing about it reaches YouTube: what the page shows is a still image served from this site and a plain link to the video. YouTube does not know you are there.
Pressing play loads the player, and from that moment YouTube can store data on your device and see that you watched. We use youtube-nocookie.com, Google's privacy-enhanced mode, which does not store viewing information for advertising purposes. What YouTube does with what it collects is covered by Google's privacy policy, not ours.
If you would rather not load it, do not press play. The page works without it and nothing else on the site depends on it.
05. Other third parties
Apart from that player, the site loads its own fonts, images and video from its own domain, so no third party sees your visit through them. Our host, Netlify, serves the site and receives what you send through its forms, and it sets no cookies in doing so.
The only outbound links are yours to follow: our LinkedIn profile, news coverage on other sites, and our hiring tools if you apply for a role or register your interest. Each has its own policies once you arrive.
A news article can also quote a LinkedIn or an X post. Those are drawn by this site from text we hold, not embedded: no script, no frame and no request of any kind goes to either company. Following the link to read the post on their site is your choice, and their policies apply once you are there.
06. How to clear or block them
Every browser lets you clear site data and block storage, usually under Privacy or Site settings. Clearing this site's data resets the three settings above; the site keeps working, it simply forgets your palette and shows you the opening animation again.
If your browser blocks storage entirely, as private browsing often does, the site handles that and carries on; it just cannot remember anything between pages.
07. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy whenever what the site stores, or what it loads from anyone else, changes. The date at the top of the page shows when it last changed.
