Robotics field applications engineer

You will build and deploy the capabilities that win contracts and set the product roadmap. The job sits between what customers need and what is technically possible.

You will work at the application layer, integrating Avalon with new hardware and sensors: ground vehicles with custom sensor packages, decision logic for specific mission sets, autonomous behaviours that answer problems customers have not articulated yet. You will prototype it, demonstrate it in the field, and turn what you learn into product direction.

This is not production engineering. It is customer-facing R&D at speed, with the whole cycle yours - first conversation, prototype, field demonstration. You will work directly with the founders and engineering leads.

• Prototype and integrate new capabilities that win contracts and close deals.
• Own platform integrations end to end: ground vehicles, maritime systems, new sensor configurations.
• Build features that answer a specific customer mission requirement.
• Deploy systems in the field, run demonstrations, troubleshoot live, and act as Breaker's technical authority with customers.
• Find the capability gaps and technical blockers through hands-on integration, and drive them into the core team's priorities.
• Work with the US missions lead to turn customer requirements into deployable technology.
• Keep a tight loop with Sydney engineering on what the field needs and why it matters.
• Travel often for customer engagements, field testing and live demonstrations.

• A degree in robotics, mechatronics, computer science, engineering or a related technical field.
• Robotics development experience deploying software on real hardware in operational environments.
• Python and/or C++ as a primary language, and experience deploying to edge devices - NVIDIA Jetson preferred.
• ROS or ROS2, and edge deployment on robotic platforms.
• Docker or other containerisation.
• A track record of delivering under pressure: customer demonstrations, competitive evaluations, live deployments.
• Comfort troubleshooting live and keeping a system working in difficult conditions.
• Clear communication across distributed teams, and the judgement to represent Breaker to customers and partners.
• Willingness to travel frequently.

• Early-stage startup experience, in robotics or defence technology.
• Ground or maritime autonomous systems - a different set of problems from aerial.
• Direct customer-facing experience turning operational requirements into delivered capability.
• A portfolio of technical projects built outside work.
• US citizenship, or a US security clearance.

On site in Austin, Texas, split between the workshop, customer sites and the field. Expect significant US and international travel.
