Robotics software engineer
Design the navigation, planning and decision-making that runs onboard our drones and ground vehicles - then take it to the field yourself.
The role
You will design and develop software features across a range of robotic systems, working with the hardware team to integrate sensors and with the machine learning team to develop and train the models.
You will take an active part in field testing, making sure systems perform in real conditions, and work with partners to integrate Avalon into their platforms. The job covers product development cycles, mission-specific autonomous agents, and the simulation, testing and evaluation that keeps all of it honest.
What you will do
- Design, implement and optimise algorithms for autonomous navigation, decision-making and motion planning.
- Work alongside the machine learning team on solutions that improve how robots adapt in changing environments.
- Create teaming strategies and algorithms for agent-driven robotic systems.
- Develop and maintain simulators and hardware-in-the-loop rigs for development, testing and optimisation.
- Take part in field testing to validate performance in real-world environments.
- Integrate and optimise sensors, cameras and other hardware into working systems.
- Work with hardware engineers and external partners to deliver solutions end to end.
- Keep technical documentation for system designs, processes and integrations.
What we are looking for
- A degree in robotics, mechatronics, computer science, engineering or a related field.
- Three or more years in computer vision for real-time systems, robotic control and motion planning, or edge computing on robotic hardware.
- Python and/or C++ as a primary language.
- Experience deploying code or firmware to edge devices.
- Australian citizenship - the role involves fieldwork and travel with robotic systems.
Useful, not required
- ROS or ROS2 development.
- CUDA, or NVIDIA Jetson platforms.
- Hands-on work with UAVs or similar platforms.
- Real-time operating systems.
- Database systems, or IoT devices.
- Experience in small, collaborative teams.
